My Mother and her iPad - update

My Mother had been keeping her distance from the iPad. I thought we were going to have a breakthrough when we found a Shirley Temple movie on NetFlix that she seemed interested in. We started watching the movie together, but it soon became clear that her hearing was not good enough for using an unamplified iPad. I have some extra portable speakers here at my place that we used to plug into the iPhone near the hot tub outside to overcome the pump noise. I just need to get the speakers to Mom's place and try them.

I'm a little concerned about this, because I really wanted the iPad to be complete just itself. I don't imagine my Mom will tote around external, battery operated speakers in her walker pouch. I'll let you know how this goes. We may just watch the NetFlix movies on an extra laptop I have at Mom's house.

But yesterday during a visit I brought the iPad. As I rested in a chair, Mom started investigating the iPad on her own as she sat at the kitchen counter. I offered a bit of guidance regarding "swiping" the screen to see more apps. Soon I heard the familiar sounds of iPad Yahtzee! She still wants to play without a computer opponent, and I haven't seen how to adjust that setting.

I purchased and downloaded a $5.99 Casino app for her to play since she like BlackJack and 5 card poker on smaller, handheld games.

When I left for the day, I left the iPad, thinking perhaps we'd made progress with her adopting the device.

But I'd forgotten something and returned several minutes after heading out to my car. What did I find? My Mother was placing the iPad gently off of the counter where she was, and onto a dining room table where she wasn't. When I called her later that night, she was playing Yahtzee on her little monochrome, hard to read, handheld game. So, she still hasn't taken to the iPad yet.
